Netflix uses AI to help you stop scrolling and start watching
A new feature guesses what mood you're in and suggests shows or movies so you spend less time browsing and more time viewing.
How it works
An AI tab in Netflix's TV app that picks shows and movies for you based on your mood, company, or free time.
- Pick a theme like "Something Light" or "Family Movie Night."
- Netflix shows matching titles with short clips.
- Narrow further or hit "Something Different" for new picks.
- Tap "Tune Your Recommendations" to block unwelcome titles.
What you could do with it
- A Netflix member could pick from AI-generated themes like "Something Light" or "Family Movie Night" to quickly find shows and movies that match their mood, the people they are with, or how much time they have, narrowing further until something clicks 2.
- A viewer could tap a "Tune Your Recommendations" button next to any title to block it from appearing again, so the system stops suggesting that unwanted show in the future 2.
- A member could press "Something Different" for a fresh set of recommendations drawn from new themes 2.
What AI Discover does
The new tab, marked by a red gem icon in the top navigation bar, is meant to replace mindless browsing with something more directed 12. When you open it, you pick from a list of themes, each one previewed with a short clip from a show or movie .
The themes fall into a handful of categories: how you want to feel ("Something Light" or "Scare Me"), who you're watching with ("Family Movie Night"), how much time you have ("Quick Watches"), what's new or trending, and what you've been watching lately 2.
After you choose a theme, Netflix shows matching recommendations and then surfaces even more specific themes so you can keep narrowing down until something clicks 2. If you'd rather start fresh, there's a "Something Different" option that reshuffles the suggestions entirely .
It learns from what you reject
One of the features that sounds most useful is the ability to tell Netflix not to recommend a title again. A "Tune Your Recommendations" button sits right next to "Play" and "My List" on every suggestion, letting you keep it or block it 2. Netflix said the tool will remember those preferences inside AI Discover so the same unwanted titles won't keep showing up .
The company described AI Discover as a "test kitchen" — a place where new discovery ideas are tried out and user feedback decides which ones stay, improve, or get retired 2. Some of them may eventually move into the main Netflix experience 1.
"AI helps create the themes you see, and we'll explain your results along the way," Netflix said in a statement 1. "AI Discover is powered by a new intelligence layer we've been building that responds to what members tell us in real time and keeps learning" .
Guess
Can kids use AI Discover right now?
Netflix confirmed AI Discover will not appear on kids profiles.
Where and when it's available
AI Discover is rolling out first in the United States, on supported TVs, for members who watch Netflix in English 12. Netflix said it will gradually expand to more people in the coming weeks, but did not give a full timeline . The feature will not appear on kids profiles, according to Variety .
This is the latest step in Netflix's long effort to help viewers find something to watch faster. Over the years the company has tested a shuffle-play option, an OpenAI-powered chatbot during a redesign last year, and long ago experimented with a chatty tool simply called Max 1. AI Discover follows that same line of work, but with a stronger emphasis on AI-driven theme matching instead of keyword search or pure history-based picks.
This story reports on a trend for information only. It is not advice or encouragement to do any of it.
