Yann LeCun bets $1 billion chatbots are a dead end

The Turing Award winner left Meta to build world-model AI — and investors handed him over a billion dollars to prove it.

A billion-dollar bet against the mainstream

Yann LeCun, the AI pioneer who won computing's highest honor for his work on neural networks, walked away from Meta in late 2025 and built a company to prove the entire industry is headed in the wrong direction. AMI Labs, based in Paris, raised $1.03 billion in its seed round — one of the largest ever for a startup at that early stage 1.

The money came from some of the most patient investors in tech: Jeff Bezos through Bezos Expeditions, Nvidia, Samsung, Toyota Ventures, Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, Hiro Capital and HV Capital. They are not funding another chatbot 2.

Why LeCun thinks LLMs are a dead end

LeCun has argued for years that large language models are fundamentally limited. They predict the next word based on statistical patterns in their training data, but they do not build internal models of how the physical world works. They pattern-match; they do not reason 2.

His alternative is an architecture called JEPA — the Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture. Instead of predicting the next token in a sequence, JEPA learns representations of how the world behaves. As one description puts it: an LLM reads a million descriptions of rain and learns to predict the word "wet" after "rain." JEPA observes rain and learns about water, gravity, surfaces and evaporation 2.

AMI Labs plans to use JEPA first for industrial applications such as robotics and anomaly detection. The company says commercial products could still take years 1.

From Meta to founder

LeCun joined Facebook in 2013 to set up its AI research lab, FAIR, which became known for open publishing and for training the first LLaMA models. But by 2025 he had grown increasingly frustrated. Meta had shifted its AI efforts under Alexandr Wang and a new superintelligence division, and FAIR was hit by layoffs in October 1. LeCun left at the end of the year 3.

He also clashed with fellow laureates Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio on risk. While they warn that AI could threaten humanity, LeCun told Fortune in October 2026 that he is not worried about extinction and called effective altruism "super toxic" 1.

AMI Labs now has about 60 employees across teams in Paris, New York, Montreal and Singapore. Alexandre LeBrun, who previously ran health start-up Nabla, is CEO; LeCun is executive chair and continues teaching at New York University 1.

What it means

The funding tells you something about the state of AI debate. Every major fund is betting on artificial intelligence. AMI Labs is a bet against the way the majority of those funds are building it 2. Whether LeCun is right will decide if the next wave of useful AI comes from systems that understand the world — or from bigger and bigger autocomplete engines.

Key facts

  • AMI Labs raised $1.03 billion at a $3.5 billion valuation in its seed round
  • Yann LeCun left Meta in late 2025 after years of public disagreement over AI direction
  • AMI Labs is building JEPA-based world models, not chatbots
  • Backers include Jeff Bezos, Nvidia, Samsung, Toyota Ventures and others
  • The company has about 60 employees and offices in Paris, New York, Montreal and Singapore
