Ben Affleck Goes Viral After Dropping Deep AI Knowledge in Interviews
The actor and filmmaker is impressing the internet with his understanding of neural networks, machine learning, and how he built his own AI startup.

Ben Affleck is having a moment — and it has nothing to do with acting. The Hollywood star went viral this week after clips from recent interviews showed him confidently explaining artificial intelligence concepts like neural networks, machine learning, transformers, tensors, GPUs, and inference.
Affleck, who founded the AI filmmaking company InterPositive in 2022, has been quietly building a reputation as someone who genuinely understands the technology behind the tools he uses. Now the internet is taking notice.
From Digital Film to Deep Learning
Affleck said his interest in AI began when analog film shifted to digital production. "I became more interested in that aspect of it, and the visual effects workflow for many years has included machine learning," he told GQ's Zach Baron in an episode of "One More Question."
He even joked that he can write "pretty shitty Python scripts" — Python being the popular coding language used by AI developers worldwide.
To explain how convolutional neural networks work, Affleck broke down the concept of a tensor, describing it as "the numerical translation of a visual image" made up of frame numbers and red, green, and blue values for each pixel. He then explained how these networks identify patterns — like where a window ledge is — to help artists remove green screens and replace them with other images.
He Used His Fame to Learn AI
In a separate clip from the Screentime 2026 conference, Affleck revealed that he used his Hollywood status to get private looks at emerging AI video models from companies including OpenAI and Google.
He described how he fine-tunes open-source video models by "unfreezing the weights" — a technical step that unlocks parts of the model for additional training — and then teaching only the final cinematic layer to meet real production standards 1. This way, a film crew can use AI tools without giving away their proprietary methods.
Affleck applied this technique on his movie "Animals," where AI helped with the post-production process.
Why He Built His Own Startup
Affleck also addressed why he created his own AI company rather than just buying existing technology. He claimed the company was sold to Netflix for a reported $587 million, though he noted the figure is "not right" because he didn't own the whole company.
"I gambled on this notion that in order to do this in an ethical way and in a way that could take this technology and actually make it work hand in glove with artists," he said. To do that, he raised money, shot for about eight months with multiple cameras, and built a custom dataset for training open AI models on specific filmmaking tasks.
He Isn't Worried About Skynet
When asked about fears that AI could become a doomsday threat, Affleck pushed back hard. "When I worry about AI, I worry about my kids in school. I worry about the 30% rise in the number of A's given out at colleges over the last three years. I worry about learned helplessness," he said 1. "I don't worry about Skynet, and I don't think it's going to take over the business in any meaningful way. I think it's going to be additive."
The clips have been shared widely online, with many commenting that the star who played a math genius in "Good Will Hunting" might have been the real genius all along.
