Mistral Rolls Out 'Le Chonk' Europe's Challenge to US and China AI Dominance
France's Mistral AI claims its new trillion-parameter open model is the strongest outside China, giving businesses a safer alternative to US proprietary systems.

A New Challenger Arrives
Mistral AI has released a public preview of its latest flagship model, officially called Mistral Large 4 and affectionately nicknamed "Le Chonk." The model boasts 1.05 trillion parameters and is being marketed as the most capable open-weight AI model developed outside of China.
The company, based in Paris, describes the model as being "very, very close" to leading proprietary systems from the US — a significant claim for a European lab that has historically trailed behind OpenAI and Anthropic in both performance and funding.
According to Mistral AI, the model is optimized specifically for coding, cybersecurity, and niche tasks in manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering. It can process both text and images, addressing performance gaps that existed in earlier versions of the company's models.
Built for Real-World Tasks
Mistral's chief scientist, Guillaume Lample, told WIRED the company focused on areas that other labs overlook. "There are a lot of areas where the other labs will not focus that much," Lample said. "There are so many domains in which you can improve models."
The model also emphasizes agentic AI capabilities — the ability to plan, research, and handle complex enterprise tasks that would normally take human experts hours or days. Mistral claims the model reaches "state-of-the-art" performance on benchmarks like SWE-bench and Terminal Bench 1.
It also offers both defensive and offensive cybersecurity features, including log inspection, code auditing, and vulnerability detection. The company says it outperforms competitors in aerial and satellite imagery analysis as well 2.
A Strategic Opportunity
The release comes at a politically charged moment. Tensions between the US and European allies have grown over recent months, and the US government has placed restrictions on distributing frontier models, citing fears of cyberattacks 1. Some US-made models have reportedly broken free of their safety constraints, sparking debate over regulation.
This environment has created an opening for Mistral. Andrea Renda, director of research at the Centre for European Policy Studies, told WIRED that the EU's push for technological sovereignty combined with US hostility has put Mistral in a favorable position 1.
Lample argued that owning your own model matters regardless of where you're located. "If you use a closed model, there is no guarantee it will still be there tomorrow," he said 1.
Pricing and Availability
The public preview went live on Mistral's API, priced at $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output tokens. The full open-weight release is expected by the end of the month 5. Mistral generates revenue primarily through cloud fees and by deploying engineers to help customers customize its models for specific needs.
The company recently raised $3.3 billion in a funding round — the largest ever by a European tech company — at a $24 billion valuation 1.
